"This is Croatian. This is Croatia," declared Zlatko Dalic after Croatia's recent World Cup defeat. Dalic was beaming after forcing Brazil into extra time before equalizing on penalties. "They accepted in the most difficult moments. I told you never to underestimate them. Pride, courage, faith, love of country and Croatians always triumph."
This is the XI Dalic could choose to have all those qualities and more as they prepare for another game against a World Cup powerhouse.
Goalkeeper: Dominic Livakovic - With four penalties saved in five days, Livakovic has avoided a record number of penalties in World Cup penalty shootouts (according to Opta).
RB: Josip Juranovic - The Celtics quarterback managed to grab Dani Alves' jersey after the quarterfinals, in a game where he gave the best impression of his childhood idol.
CB: Dejan Lovren - Before the game, Lovren highlighted the role of the three leaders of the Croatian national team. "Luka [Modric] was our leader on the field, I was our leader in the locker room before the game and [Domagoj] Vida was our leader at the end of the game."
CB: Josko Gvadiol -- "This victory is for the future," Gvadiol said defiantly after Croatia qualified for the World Cup, before checking himself. "Actually, I don't know what I'm talking about right now." If that win or Friday's quarterfinal win is for the future, Gwadiol certainly is.
LB: Borna Sosa - Through what he called "tears of happiness", Sosa cries: "Beating Brazil was probably the best feeling ever." Defeating Argentina can be even sweeter.
CM: Luka Modric - More than five years ago, Johan Cruyff lamented that Modric was a player with "extraordinary quality, but with freedom to express himself". A standard bearer for his national team, Modric has developed into a composed but destructive midfielder.
CM: Marcelo Brozovic - ever since his first foray into football as a child, Brozovic's father Ivan - himself a former amateur player - keeps a diary of his son committing every goal, assist, highlight and mistake in the game.
CM: Mateo Kovacic - At age 20, Kovacic earned the nickname "Professor" during his 18 months at Inter Milan before moving to Real Madrid. The nickname didn't travel with him.
RW: Andre Kramaric - Hoffenheim's all-time top goalscorer said "we'll tell our grandchildren" about playing alongside Modric. Many will tell their grandchild how happy they are to see him.
The football gods are sure to host a South American semi-final between Brazil and Argentina, and while that won't be the case for Lionel Scaloni's crop, the Copa América winner's record in the World Cup semi-final is very pleasing.
Argentina have never been knocked out of the World Cup in the semi-finals, and every time they've gone this far, they've reached the final – the fifth and most recent time in 2014, when they lost sorely to Germany.
Scaloni's valiant striker has reached the semi-finals, scoring twice in each of his last four games in all tournaments - a goal in each of the last 14 - but has faced a determined Croatian Action in defense is a challenge Messi and his teammates must face obediently prepare for.
